There are a lot of trade secrets in the beauty industry– tips, tricks and methods stylists spend years mastering. Yet the secret to a fabulous style isn’t the latest product or cutting technique. The secret to a fabulous style is communication.

Speak up during your appointment to ensure a fabulous style that meets all your expectations.
Good communication makes a world of difference when you’re in the salon chair. There’s a funny saying amongst cosmetologists that sums up this idea: “I’m a beautician, not a magician!” Your stylist can’t read your mind, and you can’t expect the perfect haircut or color if you don’t communicate exactly what it is you want.
Here are a few tips to help you communicate more effectively next time you’re in the stylists’ chair:
1. Come prepared. Nothing is more frustrating for a stylist than for a client to not know what they want– then to dislike the final result! Think about what you want to do with your hair before you arrive at your appointment.
2. Use real examples. Telling your stylist you want your haircut just like Jennifer Aniston is not helpful. Jen’s had a lot of different styles through the years, and there’s no guarantee the cut you’re thinking of is the same cut the stylist has in mind. Say things like “I want my hair to hit the top of my shoulders” or “I want color that is dark brown with a little tint of red” to ensure you paint a clear picture of your vision.
3. Ask questions. If the stylist asks if you want two inches off make sure you can visualize two inches. If you’re not sure, ask your stylist to show you the amount on her comb. Ask about different color options if you didn’t love the results of your last visit, and ask about styling tips if you’re not sure how to recreate your new look at home. You’re paying for your hair stylist’s time, so use her as a resource during your appointment.
4. Speak up. If you don’t completely love your hair be sure to speak up! Client satisfaction is our top priority at Fine Reflections Salons– if you’re not happy, we’re not happy. If you go home and realize later that you aren’t pleased with your service be sure to call the salon within 24 hours. Nothing is worse for a stylist than hearing that a client didn’t love their hair last time.
