Permanent, semi and demi… oh my! There are a lot of options when it comes to hair color. Not only are there various brands and colors to choose from, but there are also different types of hair color. The biggest difference between hair color types is how the work. Below is a quick reference of the three most popular color types, as well as how they work and who is the ideal candidate for them.
Happy coloring!
Semi Permanent Color: Semi permanent color is the gentlest of hair color options. It is sometimes referred to as a rinse or glaze. Semi permanent color works by coating the hair, allowing the follicles to absorb the chosen color. Semi permanent color can cover greys, but is best suited for clients who want to subtlely change their color or add shine and depth to their hair.
Demi Permanent Color: Demi permanent color is the next step up in the color options. Remember that “Demi” sounds like “deeper.” Demi permanent color contains peroxide that works to open the hair cuticle so the color can reach deeper into the follicle. Demi permanent color is a great option for clients looking to shake things up, or for those who need extra grey coverage.
Permanent Color: Permanent color is the most drastic hair color option. Permanent color works by removing the color deposits from the cortex of each hair follicle then depositing a new color in its place. Permanent color is just that– permanent– so it’s not for clients looking to experiment. Permanent color is the best option for complete grey coverage or for clients who want to lighten their hair.
Who knew there were almost as many hair color options as there are colors to choose from? What is your favorite type of hair color and why?
